Police nab 3 gunsmiths in Abia
By Ugochukwu Alaribe
ABA— Men of the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS,
stationed at Obehie Division, Abia State, have arrested three
suspects for allegedly manufacturing and selling guns.
The suspects; Ejiofor Kanu, Udo Nwanmuo Jacob and
Allwell Anyanwu, who are said to be natives of Ukwa West
council area of the state, were arrested at different locations
in the area following a tip off.
Items recovered from the suspects include; assembled
guns, gas cylinder, gas oxygen, pipes of various sizes and
hammer among others.
It was also learnt that the suspects have been in the
business for over 10 years. In an interview, the suspects
admitted that they do not have the license to manufacture
the guns, insisting that they sell the Dane guns to hunters in
the area and denied that their clients use the guns for
robbery.
Reacting to the arrest, the State Commissioner of Police,
Habila Joshak, who commended the SARS’ men for their
prompt response, stressed that the lives and property of
people in the area and environs would have been in danger
if the weapons were not recovered from the suspects.
He recalled that the area was, in the past, noted for crimes
such as kidnapping, armed robbery and amongst other
crimes, particularly during the “Osisikankwu kidnapping” saga
in the state.
